1.1 Introduction to Job satisfaction

“Job satisfaction is the degree to which individuals feel positively or negatively about their job”

Job satisfaction is one of the most researched variables in the area of workplace psychology, and has been associated with numerous psychosocial issues ranging from leadership to job design. This article seeks to outline the key definitions relating to job satisfaction, the main theories associated with explaining job satisfaction, as well as the types of and issues surrounding the measurement of job satisfaction. While it is also important to explore what factors precede and are impacted by job satisfaction, this is covered in a separate article.

1.2 Factors affecting job satisfaction

Primarily there are few factors that affect the job satisfaction

1.     Working Conditions

Because employees spend so much time in their work environment each week, it's important for companies to try to optimize working conditions. Such things as providing spacious work areas rather than cramped ones, adequate lighting, and comfortable workstations contribute to favorable work conditions. Providing productivity tools such as upgraded information technology to help employees accomplish tasks more efficiently contributes to job satisfaction as well.

2.     Opportunity for Advancement

Employees are more satisfied with their current job if they see a path available to move up the ranks in the company and be given more responsibility and along with it higher compensation. Many companies encourage employees to acquire more advanced skills that will lead to the chance of promotion. Companies often pay the cost of tuition for employees taking university courses, for example. During an employee's annual performance review, a supervisor should map out a path showing her what she needs to accomplish and what new skills she needs to develop in order to be on a track to advancement within the organization.

        3. Workload and Stress Level

Dealing with a workload that is far too heavy and deadlines that are impossible to reach can cause job satisfaction to erode for even the most dedicated employee. Falling short of deadlines results in conflict between employees and supervisors and raises the stress level of the workplace. Many times, this environment is caused by ineffective management and poor planning. The office operates in a crisis mode because supervisors don't allow enough time for employees to perform their assigned tasks effectively or because staff levels are inadequate.

4.   Respect from Co-Workers

Employees seek to be treated with respect by those they work with. A hostile work environment -- with rude or unpleasant coworkers -- is one that usually has lower job satisfaction. In an August 2011 survey published by FoxBusiness.com, 50 percent of those responding said they had personally experienced a great amount of workplace incivility.

1.2 DETERMINANTS OF JOB SATISFACTION:

While analyzing the various determinants of job satisfaction, we have to keep in mind that: all individuals do not derive the same degree of satisfaction though they perform in the same job environment and at the same time. Therefore, it appears that besides the nature of the job and job environment, there are individual variables that affect job satisfaction thus all those factors which provide a fit among individual variables, the nature of the job, and the situation variables determine the degree of the satisfaction. Let us see what these factors are:-recent also believe morale is poor where they work. Managers need to step in and mediate conflicts before they escalate into more serious problems requiring disciplinary action. Employees may need to be reminded of what behaviors are considered inappropriate when interacting with coworkers.

5.     Relationship with Supervisors

Effective managers know their employees need recognition and praise for their efforts and accomplishments. Employees also need to know their supervisor's door is always open for them to discuss any concerns they have that are affecting their ability to do their jobs effectively and impeding their satisfaction at the office.

6.     Financial Rewards

Job satisfaction is impacted by an employee's views about the fairness of the company wage scale as well as the current compensation she may be receiving. Companies need to have a mechanism in place to evaluate employee performance and provide salary increases to top performers. Opportunities to earn special incentives, such as bonuses, extra paid time off or vacations, also bring excitement and higher job satisfaction to the workplace.

1.3 Need for the job satisfaction

Job satisfaction is increasingly becoming important in the workplace. Employers now recognize that the "happier" their employees are, the better will be their attitudes toward the work, the higher their motivation, and the better will be their performance.

Job satisfaction in any field of work depends a lot on how conducive the work environment is. The work itself, the pay, and the scope for promotion are only some of the factors which have an impact on job satisfaction

1.4 IMPROVING JOB SATISFACTION:

Job satisfaction plays a significant role in the organization. Therefore, managers should take concrete steps to improve the level of job satisfaction. These steps may be in the form of job redesigning to make the job more interesting and challenging, improving the quality of work-life, linking rewards with performance, and improving the overall organizational climate. As part of a  larger project whose goal was to create an employee-driven,  survey-improvement process six factors that influenced job satisfaction. When these six factors were high, job satisfaction was high. When the six factors were low, job satisfaction was low. These factors are similar to what we have found in other organizations.

Theories of job satisfaction

Job satisfaction theories have a strong overlap with theories explaining human motivation. The most common and prominent theories in this area include Maslow’s needs hierarchy theory Herzberg’s motivator-hygiene theory; the Job Characteristics Model and the dispositional approach. These theories are described and discussed below.

Hierarchy of needs

Although commonly known in the human motivation literature, Maslow’s needs hierarchy theory was one of the first theories to examine the important contributors to job satisfaction. The theory suggests that human needs form a five-level hierarchy (Figure 1) consisting of physiological needs, safety, belongingness/love, esteem, and self-actualization. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs postulates that there are essential needs that need to be met first (such as physiological needs and safety) before more complex needs can be met (such as belonging and esteem).
